A stunning Gala concert to celebrate the Liberation of Jersey features music written in times of peace between the wars. Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, written in 1905, is one of his most beautiful works. It draws on transcendent welsh folk melodies as well as paying considerable homage to Bach by the use of a dramatic fugue. The double violin concerto is one of the master’s great works - with the majestic slow movement separating virtuoso playing and sparring between the two violins and the orchestra. The final concerto in the programme, Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Piano, was written by the man who played a significant part in Bach’s revival. It is a tour de force of adolescent brilliance written after the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
The soloists include the recent Classic FM Artist of the Year Nicola Benedetti, the members of the highly acclaimed Sitkovetsky Trio, as well young rising star Wen Xiao Zheng a recent prize winner at the ARD international festival.
A pre-concert talk by one of the soloists will take place in the main auditorium at 7pm.

The Sitkovetsky Trio and celebrated friends perform Schubert’s celebrated “Trout” Quintet based on the story of a trout’s attempt to escape to freedom as well as Tchaikovsky’s passionate Trio relating to the loss of an artist.
The “Trout” is one of Schubert’s most delightful works describing a fish darting joyously about in a clear stream to elude a fisherman. The repeated melody is effortless, thoroughly enchanting and further enlivened by a leaping, joyous figure evoking the trout darting across the stream.
Tchaikovsky’s Trio pays tribute to a former teacher, paying tribute to his skills with a virtuoso piano part, as well as rejoicing in his love of folk like themes recalling a day when the two friends had gone for a picnic in the mountains near Moscow and were given an impromptu performance of folk music by peasants.
The soloists include Nicola Benedetti - the recent Classic FM Artist of the Year, Stacey Watton - one of the great Double Bass players of his generation, the highly acclaimed Sitkovetsky Trio, as well as young rising star Wen Xiao Zheng - a recent prize winner at the ARD international festival.
The concert will be preceded by a question and answer session with the soloists at 7pm.
VIP Tickets include champagne reception with the soloists.
Programme:
Schubert - “Trout” Quintet in A Major
Tchaikovsky - Trio in A minor
Soloists: Sitkovetsky Trio, Nicola Benedetti (Violin), Wenxiao Zheng (Viola) & Stacey Watton (Double Bass)

Expect and eclectic array of artists; inclucing Tim and Hamid from TGU, singer-songwriter Jim Moray, Martin Furey, the Perunika trio, visuals and more surprises!
Saxophonists Andy Schofield and Jo McCallum have created a dynamic new 17 piece jazz orchestra. The line-up unites established artists with the finest of the region's young emerging talent, as they storm through a selection of original works by North West composers and arrangers.
Their new project for 2010, supported by Arts Council England profiles two national guitar greats, Mike Walker (Jacqui Dankworth, Mike Gibbs, etc.) and Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra, Don Weller, etc.). The music of these artists has been arranged for the jazz orchestra with guest appearances from these incredible musicians.
This collaboration between the great French jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz and the extraordinary funk/soul/blues beatbox stylings of Simple Spirit's vocalist Sly Johnson has thrilled audiences across the world.
Erik Truffaz mines the world to create his unique form of jazz - the so-called 'European sounds' are really the sounds of the global village in the digital age. Fusing these world, electronic and ambient influences with an ongoing love for the music of Miles Davis and an incredible minimalist style, has led to a sound that is all his own and exemplified beautifully in this wonderful partnership with Sly Johnson (aka The Mic Buddah/The Beatboxologist) - a member of the acclaimed French rap collective Saian Supa Crew.
Band on the Wall is now delighted to bring this sensational duo to its Manchester stage.
"Truffaz plays less like Miles than a jazz-rock [Brian] Eno, making rapturous atmospheres from a minimum of notes ... a jazz with brawn, soul and plenty of wide open space." - David Fricke
The launch of a brand new Manchester-based record label Caserta Red.

The band features Paul Baird on vocals/guitar, Martin Cowan on bass and Chris Norwood on drums.
£10 admission includes a copy of Glass' album (to be collected upon arrival).
Performing collaboratively for the first time, prepared piano player Hauschka, 12-string guitarist James Blackshaw, and singer/songwriter Nancy Elizabeth play their beautifully matched music together in a contoured programme of solo and ensemble performances.
The Kept Impulses tour brings together three gifted young music makers who weave traditional folk, contemporary classical and modern song into textured, emotional and transfixing songs and musical suites. The prepared piano player Hauschka (FatCat) from Germany, singer/multi-instrumentalist Nancy Elizabeth (Leaf Label) from Manchester, and the 12-string guitarist James Blackshaw (Young God) from Hastings, Kent are brought together for this special tour to entice concert halls with their beautifully matched music. All three have the endearing talent of being able to harness wild impulses into measured and musical journeys that run deep.
Each artist will perform their own material each night, with the other two musicians guesting on selected tracks. The ensemble will also perform material devised collaboratively together for the very first time. The acts are distinct but musically complimentary and these collaborations are an exciting prospect, combining Hauschka's percussive piano interventions with James Blackshaw's cascading acoustic guitar and Nancy Elizabeth's pure and emotive vocals.
